Contractor was born in Mumbai and lived in Nigeria for seven years had a wide range of cultural experiences and travels at an early age. She earned a master's in theatre, and also double-majored in psychology and social science. Contractor with a degree in sociology, having been a student for a year, went on to audition during an open call for Pericles, at the prestigious Stratford Shakespeare Festival, [Ontario Canada] and won the role. After 92 performances, she received positive reviews. This play was named the best production in Canada by the critics. The opportunity was presented to her to be a part of the Stratford Conservatory. The school accepts only eight men and four women for a crash course in the art of classical theatre. Contractor eagerly accepted. Contractor was offered a slot for the following season, and was offered the role as Hermia.
